web site development includes all of the elements of web design, but expands on them by adding a dynamic, interactive component beyond that of a basic contact form. It is not uncommon for a business to start off with a basic site and then add additional functionality later on.

the most common types of sites requiring development rather than simple design are probably shopping and membership sites. The visitor, depending on the type of site, will be able to make purchases, become a member of an organization, enroll in a course, subscribe to a service, or participate in many other activities.

For example, an e-commerce site's structure allows for products to be called up from a database and delivered individually or in groups to the viewer, who can then select items for purchase and later proceed to automated checkout and payment. The merchant might download the orders and import them directly into a processing program, or the site could simply email each order individually, all depending on stated preferences. Development can be as simple or as complex as needed to make the site work to the owner's specifications.

the process and steps are very similar to basic web site design. Consultations will however focus much more on the functionality of the site, and often a "backend" will be written so the site owner can, for example, add products to the database, download orders, administer and send emails to customers, or make other changes and adjustments.

the last phase is usually the addition of payment options, merchant accounts and gateways for credit card processing.
